Autumn Play & Activities

Autumn is a magical time of the year, with crisp air, colourful leaves and plenty of opportunities for outdoor play and exploration. Here you’ll find a variety of engaging and eco friendly activities suitable for younger children. From nature walks and leaf art to creative indoor play with things like loose parts. Let’s make the most of this wonderful season and have a playful autumn.

Nature Walks and Leafy Adventures (Ages 3-6)

  1. Leaf Pile Jumping: Gather fallen leaves from your garden or a nearby park and create a big pile. Encourage your child to jump in the pile, toss leaves in the air and feel the satisfying crunch under their feet. It’s a simple joy that captures the essence of autumn.
  2. Leaf Art: Collect leaves of different shapes and colours during a nature walk. When you return home, use these leaves to create beautiful leaf art. Arrange them on paper to make leaf animals, collages or even leaf people. You can glue them or simply let your child’s creativity flow.
  3. Nature Hunt: Create a list of autumn-themed items like acorns, pinecones, colourful leaves and twigs or print out our free Autumn nature hunt cards. Go on a nature hunt with your child, ticking off items as you find them. This activity not only promotes outdoor exploration but also enhances observational skills.

Indoor Autumn Play (Ages 1-4)

  1. Wooden Hedgehog Puzzle: Our wooden hedgehog puzzle is the perfect eco friendly toy for your child’s playtime. This delightful puzzle, made from sustainable wood, features chunky pieces that are easy for little hands to grasp. As your child fits the pieces together, they’ll develop fine motor skills and problem-solving abilities.
  2. Autumn Storytelling: Gather around and create a cozy storytelling corner using soft blankets and pillows. Choose autumn-themed books and take turns reading or making up stories together. Encourage your child to use their imagination and add their own twists to the tales.
  3. Leaf Sorting: Collect a variety of leaves during your nature walks. Once back home, have your child sort the leaves by size, colour or shape. This simple activity not only introduces basic maths concepts but also keeps the spirit of autumn alive indoors.

Eco Friendly Loose Parts Play (Ages 2-6)

  1. Pinecone Creations: Pinecones are abundant in autumn and make fantastic loose parts for creative play. Set up a pinecone crafting station with glue, coloured paper and stick on eyes. Your child can transform pinecones into cute critters or imaginative characters.
  2. Acorn Counting: Gather acorns and arrange them in a bowl. Practise counting and simple maths with your child by asking them to add or subtract acorns. You can also create patterns or use them for imaginative play, turning acorns into decorations.
  3. Seed and Nut Sorting: Save seeds and nuts from autumn fruits (like pumpkins and apples) and encourage your child to sort them into different containers based on size or type. This activity promotes fine motor skills, organisation and sensory exploration.

Outdoor Autumn Adventures (Ages 1-6)

  1. Apple Picking: Autumn is apple season! Visit a local orchard with your little ones and let them pick their own apples. It’s a fun and educational experience that also supports local farms.
  2. Scarecrow Building: Get creative with recycled materials and build your own scarecrow in the backyard or garden. Let your child’s imagination run wild as they design the scarecrow’s outfit and features. This hands-on project combines arts and crafts with outdoor play.
  3. Bird Watching: As the weather cools down, many bird species migrate or become more active. Set up a bird feeder or birdhouse in your garden or on your window cill. Spend time observing and identifying birds together.
